Brian Patten was born in Liverpool in 1946.

In 1973 he co-edited The House That Jack Built, an anthology of poems about physical and spiritual decay, all royalties from which go to Shelter.

His works have appeared in many magazines and anthologies, including the Penguin Voices series, and the Oxford Book of Twentieth Century English Verse.

He is interested in children's literature. He has also written an adaption of the Aesop fable, The Sly Cormorant and the Fish (1977).
